How often should you clean your mattress?
On average, mattresses are recommended for use over a period of 8-10 years. However, during this time, they accumulate a significant amount of bodily fluids, odours, and dead skin cells. Even with the practice of changing sheets regularly and using mattress protectors, mattresses still become a breeding ground for various organisms like dust mites, mould, fungi, viruses, and bacteria. It may not be a pleasant thought, but the truth is that every night we share our beds with countless tiny organisms.
Dust mites, particularly, thrive in warm and humid environments, making mattresses an ideal habitat for them. To maintain a hygienic sleeping environment, it is advisable to have your mattress cleaned at least once every 12 months, and more frequently if there have been incidents of bedwetting, night sweats, or when sharing the bed with another person. Additionally, it’s a good practice to vacuum your mattress regularly. If possible, exposing the mattress to direct sunlight for a few hours occasionally can also be beneficial.
